I LOVE/hate CNY. Note the futile attempt to make ‘love’ bigger than ‘hate’. It’s only because I can’t change the font size (or if there is a way to, I haven’t found it).
3 reasons why I love CNY; good food, family time, and cash. Yes cash. Don’t tell me you don’t like it for the cash.
1 reason why I don’t like CNY; the good food. The food is too good, to the point that my resistance is lowered. And that leads on to other things, like weight gain and sore throats. I’m already feeling a little under the weather.
Oh well. It’ll all be over before I know it. I hope.
Peranakan heritage January 24, 2009

I love the fact that I’m half Peranakan. Not that I follow all those traditions and rituals, I love being Peranakan mainly for the food.
Buah Keluak, Ayam Kunyit… Even better is that I eat it once a year, at every CNY.

This year, I decided to try out knocking the seeds. Apparently I did it pretty quickly, according to my mum. Still need practice though, because some of the holes I knocked were a bit too big. Each time I knocked one shell, I’d take a wiff of it, and most of the time, it smells… heavenly.
This afternoon I helped with the coconut milk too. Had to squeeze coconut milk from the grated coconut. My hands and wrist hurt after that, but hey, it was fun.
Next year I’ll have to level up, from just knocking Buah Keluak to scrubbing. The year after that I’ll level up to preparing the spices, and the year after that… Well you get my drift. (:

Sometimes, I find it absolutely annoying when people start complaining about how they have to travel from Pasir Ris to Boon Lay everyday, how they end at 5.30pm everyday except Tuesdays, how they have so many assignments to do. In my own head, I’d be screaming at them, hey! I have to travel from Pasir Ris to Boon Lay everyday, I end at 5.30pm everyday except Wednesdays (when I end at 6), and I have about as many tutorials and lab reports and projects to do so what are you complaining about?!?!
Not that I haven’t been a hypocrite about this, since I am complaining about it anyway. And while I don’t like it when people complaining, I awfully hate myself for being such a complainer.
People love to use the phrase, ‘it’s a dog-eat-dog world out there’, or exclaim ever so melodramatically ‘Oh! Cruel world!’ with so much sadness and loathing in their voice. I wonder though, if those people have ever thought that if the world was truly cruel, and we are really like the dogs ‘eating each other’, why then are we actually still here? Why is there still love in this world, why do families still make babies? Unless one is suggesting that these families are sadists and only do so to inflict the same harsh realities on their tiny tots, I don’t think it’s fair to say that the world is cruel.
The only reason I would say this world is cruel, is because of sin. I could start a whole separate argumentative on sin itself (I still remember one I did for JC), but I shan’t, due to the lack of time, and a proper train of thought.
Seriously though, anyone who says the world is cruel needs to get their head done in. I’ve more blessings than I ought to to think that there’s no love in this world.
